«Antes del plano de Manhattan y de los libros de cuentos, el primer regalo que Sara había recibido del rey-librero de Morningside –cuando tenía sólo dos años– fue un rompecabezas enorme. Sus cubos llevaban en cada cara una letra mayúscula diferente, con el dibujo en colores de una flor, fruta o animal cuyo nombre empezara por aquella letra.

Gracias a este rompecabezas, Sara se familiarizó con las vocales y las consonantes, y les tomó cariño, incluso antes de entender para qué servían. Ponía en fila los cubos, les daba la vuelta y combinaba a su capricho las letras que iba distinguiendo unes de otras por aquellos perfiles tan divertidos y peculiares. La E parecía un peine, la S una serpiente, la O un huevo, la X una cruz ladeada, la H una escalera para enanos, la T una antena de televisión, la F una bandera rota.

Su padre le había dado un cuaderno grande, con tapas duras como de libro, que le había sobrado de llevar las cuentas de la fontanería. Era de papel cuadriculado, con rayas rojas a la izquierda, y en él empezó a pintar Sara unos garabatos que imitaban las letras y otros que imitaban muebles, cacharros de cocina, nubes o tejados. No veía diferencia entre dibujar y escribir…».
